Veneers Q&A
What are veneers?
Veneers are incredibly thin, tooth-colored coverings made of porcelain or composite resin. They’re bonded to the front of your natural teeth, masking cosmetic imperfections that won’t respond to other types of treatment like teeth whitening or orthodontics.
Some people receive just one veneer to repair a chipped or pointy tooth. Others get six or eight to restore balance and symmetry to their smile.
What types of imperfections can veneers cover up?
The team at Image Aesthetic Dentistry uses veneers to cover minor oral imperfections, including:
- Crooked or overlapping teeth
- Unusually shaped teeth
- Brown or yellow tooth stains
- Pointy teeth
- Chips and fractures
If you have gaps between your teeth, you might also benefit from veneers.
What does getting veneers involve?
Getting veneers at Image Aesthetic Dentistry takes two appointments.
First appointment
Your provider conducts an oral exam, asks what you like and don’t like about your smile, and takes a series of oral X-rays. If you have misaligned teeth or gum disease, they might recommend orthodontic treatment or scaling and root planing before moving forward.
If your teeth and gums appear healthy, your provider administers a local anesthetic and shaves a thin layer of enamel from each tooth. Then, they take digital impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental laboratory.
The laboratory uses your impressions to design and manufacture a set of custom veneers.
Second appointment
When Image Aesthetic Dentistry receives the veneers, you return to the office. Your provider administers a local anesthetic, lines up the veneers with your teeth, and carefully bonds them in place. When the bonding material dries, your provider polishes the veneers, trims any excess material, and provides care instructions.
Do veneers last forever?
Veneers won’t last forever, but their average lifespan is 12-15 years. To keep them in optimal condition, the team at Image Aesthetic Dentistry recommends visiting the office every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning and brushing and flossing daily.
To protect your veneers from damage, wear a mouthguard if you grind your teeth, and avoid bad habits like chewing on ice cubes or popcorn kernels.
